“Comunidad de las Naciones” (The Community of Nations) is a ministry of St. Giles. Together, we are discovering what it means to be a multi-ethnic church.
Comunidad was planted in April of 2004 when the Session of St. Giles felt very strongly the leading of the Lord to establish a hispanic ministry. Charlotte is a major center of latino immigration in the U.S, and St. Giles is situated in the heart of the latino population explosion here. As a result, St. Giles brought in Alejandro Ruz and his family from Chile to plant the latino ministry.
Ale pastured the church for five years and then felt called to return to Chile to plant a church there. He asked Nick Bowen if he would serve as pastor of Comunidad, and Nick agreed. Both Nick and his wife, Pat, speak Spanish, and have been active in Comunidad since it was formed. Nick and Pat both attended Bible school together, and both are ordained. Because Nick is also a member of St. Giles and has served as both deacon and elder, that connection will help cement and solidify the growing relationship between the two churches.
Comunidad meets on the St. Giles property in the Fellowship Hall. It has its own congregation, worship team, children’s ministry, discipleship groups, prayer meeting, and functions. All adult meetings are conducted in Spanish but there is simultaneous translation for each part of the service including the songs, so English speakers can understand and participate in the entire meeting. The worship style is the same in both churches and we sing a lot of the same songs, only in different languages. The children’s ministry is conducted in English.
Comunidad meets at 10:30 am on Sunday mornings and 7:30 pm on Wednesday nights. A women’s ministry meets twice a month. There is also a monthly Vigil and a Prayer and Fasting meeting on the last full weekend of each month.
