In my time of prayer for St Giles today, I was led to one of the old praise songs. I think this speaks to our church and also to the prayer point in Marlise’s devotion for today. Here are the lyrics: (sorry, I can’t credit the source, as I have no idea who wrote it)

Awake, Awake, put on thy strength, oh Zion,
    Put on thy beautiful garments.
Awake, Awake, put on thy strength, oh Zion,
    Put on thy beautiful garments.
    Oh, Jerusalem, the holy city,
    Shake thyself from the dust.
Oh, Jerusalem, arise and sit down.
Loose thyself from the bands of thy neck.
Awake, Awake, put on thy strength, oh Zion,
    Put on thy beautiful garments.

For St Giles, my sense is that the “beautiful garments” are our praise and worship, and this is a source of our strength. However, there is much that can weigh us down; we have to choose to shake off the dust and drop the chains that can hinder our praise. I stand in agreement with Marlise’s prayer that the Lord will show us what the hindrances are and that He will help us to remove them.

One more impression that supports the idea of power in worship: as we were worshipping this morning, I was looking at the cross at the front of the sanctuary. The circle of red glass at the center of the cross seemed to be pulsating. I got a sense of incredible power, centered on the cross, just about to burst out.

All of this reminded me to pray especially for our worship leaders. They do a wonderful job, and they play such a vital role! Thanks to all of you.
